The Basics
Laminate is a man-made floor with four distinct layers. At the base is a stabilising backing layer. Above that sits a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core — the structural heart of the board. A photographic layer sits on top, printed to look exactly like real wood, stone or concrete. Finally, a clear wear layer protects the surface from scratches and daily wear.
The key thing to understand about laminate is the AC rating. This tells you how hard-wearing a board is. AC3 suits most residential homes. AC4 handles heavier use — a busy hallway, for example, or a home office where people sit in rolling chairs.

Laminate is usable in kitchens, but not wet rooms. Wipe spills immediately and never let water sit in the joints. If the kitchen gets very wet, LVT is a safer choice.
Low moisture, light traffic — perfect laminate conditions. Warmer than tile and much easier to maintain than carpet. A popular choice in bedrooms throughout the North West.
Go for AC4-rated boards in busy hallways. Laminate handles footwear traffic well and holds its appearance. Use stair nosings for a neat, safe finish on stairs.

Laminate is great — but it's not right for every situation. Here are some alternatives.
Common Questions
No — laminate is not waterproof. The HDF core can absorb moisture if water sits in the joints, causing the boards to swell and lift. This means laminate is not suitable for bathrooms, shower rooms or any room where water regularly pools on the floor. In a kitchen, it can work if spills are wiped up promptly and the room is well ventilated. For genuinely wet areas, LVT is a far safer choice.
AC3 covers most residential use — living rooms, bedrooms and quieter hallways. If your hallway sees heavy footwear traffic, or you have a home office with rolling chairs, step up to AC4. AC5 is commercial-grade and rarely needed in a home setting. As a rule, don't under-specify — it's worth spending a little more on the wear layer if the room takes a hammering.
Some laminate products are rated for use with underfloor heating, but not all. You must check the specific product's technical data sheet — it will state the maximum surface temperature (usually 27°C) and any restrictions on system type. The board also needs to acclimatise carefully before fitting. We always check compatibility when we quote for a job. If you have UFH and want a guaranteed-compatible floor, LVT or engineered wood are more straightforward choices.
Quality laminate from brands like Quick-Step or Pergo typically carries a 15–25 year residential guarantee. In practice, lifespan depends on two things: the wear layer specification and how well you maintain it. AC3-rated boards in a normal living room should last 15–20 years. AC4 boards in a busy hallway might give you a similar lifespan because they're rated for harder use. The finish is the first thing to go — once it looks dull, the boards are usually at the end of their life.
