Flooring That Fits Wigan Homes

Wigan's housing is predominantly 1930s and 1950s semi-detached — solid, well-built and typically in reasonable condition. In places like Standish, Appley Bridge and the better parts of Ince, these semis have been well looked after. Leigh and Hindley have a slightly older mix, with some early twentieth-century terraces alongside the postwar stock. Around Wigan town centre there's also growing new build development that attracts demand for LVT and contemporary finishes.

It's a practical area with practical priorities. People in Wigan want a floor that does its job, looks good and doesn't cause problems down the line. That suits us well — we don't overcomplicate things, we just fit good floors properly.

We cover the whole of the Wigan borough — from Standish in the north to Hindley and Abram in the south, and across to Leigh and Tyldesley in the east.

Services Available in Wigan

LVT Installation

One of the most popular choices across Wigan's semi-detached stock. LVT is warm, comfortable, waterproof and available in realistic wood and stone finishes. It works particularly well in kitchens, hallways and open-plan areas in both 1930s and 1950s homes.

Engineered Wood

For Wigan homes where you want a genuine timber floor, engineered wood is the right choice. It's available in a range of species and finishes and suits the character of the interwar semis that dominate areas like Standish particularly well.

LVT kitchen and hallway — 1930s semi, Standish

Laminate throughout ground floor — family home, Hindley

Engineered oak living room — interwar semi, Leigh

"We had Halvar out to our 1930s semi in Standish — wanted LVT in the kitchen and laminate in the rest of the ground floor. They were upfront about the subfloor needing a bit of levelling in the kitchen, told us the cost upfront and got it sorted on the day. The finish is really clean and the transition between the two floors in the hallway is perfect. Wouldn't hesitate to use them again."

Flooring Questions — Wigan

What's the best flooring for a 1930s or 1950s semi in Wigan?

Most 1930s and 1950s semis in Wigan have a mix of subfloor types — timber suspended floors on the ground floor in the older builds, concrete screed in some of the postwar properties. We check both. For timber subfloors, LVT and engineered wood work well as long as the boards are secured and level. For concrete, LVT is particularly well-suited. We'll assess what you've got and match the right product to it.

Can you fit flooring over underfloor heating in Wigan new builds?

Yes — the new build areas around Wigan town centre often include underfloor heating systems. Both LVT and engineered wood can be fitted over UFH, but the screed needs to be fully dried first and the UFH needs to be commissioned properly before installation. We check moisture levels and work with you to ensure the screed is ready. Fitting too early is the most common cause of flooring problems in new builds — we won't rush that step.

Do you cover Leigh and the other parts of the Wigan borough?

Yes — we cover the whole of the Wigan metropolitan borough, including Leigh, Tyldesley, Atherton, Hindley, Abram, Ashton-in-Makerfield and Standish. We're also close to the border with Bolton, so if you're in between the two areas don't hesitate to ask. Wigan is within our regular coverage and we're there often.
